CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Where’s Mattie?” asked Luke.

“She’s with Mom and some of the others walking the gardens,” said Jak.

“Have you been eating more?” smirked Cam. “I think you’ve grown.”

“Fuck you, asshole. Some of us need our protein. What have you found in Haiti?” he asked the tech team.

“What haven’t we found,” said Sly. “We already knew the government was a shit show. There is no government to speak of. Gangs are rampant. Drugs are rampant. Trafficking, chaos, and all this shit you’re running into isn’t new.

“For the past ten years, tourists have been saying that things were put in their drinks, or they were given something that made them ‘out of it.’ They’d wake up in a different part of the city or a different hotel, robbed, sometimes beaten or raped, but not remembering anything.”

“That seems normal for that part of the world,” frowned Jak.

“Maybe, but the thing is, it wasn’t happening to random tourists. These people were targeted for some reason.”

“What makes you say that?” asked Hex.

“Three people were drugged, robbed, beaten, and nearly killed when they were in Haiti on a mission trip with a church. They were all at the same event. More than two hundred people. Yet, they selected just those three. Why?”

“It still could be random,” said Jak. “I mean, why one of my men?”

“What do you know about him?” asked Hiro.

“I know that he’s been a Ranger for seven years. He was transferred into my unit about eight months ago. He’s been fairly quiet, follows orders. I know he’s married, but that’s about it.”

“That’s not it,” said Hiro. “He was transferred to your unit to straighten him out. He underwent psychiatric evaluation for an incident that is so deeply hidden in his file I can’t even see it. I’m working on it, but I can’t see it right now.”

“What the fuck? Why wasn’t I told?” said Jak.

“Patient confidentiality and all that bullshit. Someone felt that it wouldn’t affect him as a Ranger, but they wanted him under your eye and the eye of your commander, Hamish McDonald. Both of you are known as strong, stern leaders who are fair to your men but also follow the rules.”

“What the hell? Those five people we had in our tents that were catatonic, they weren’t connected in any way.”

“Outwardly, no. But we did find them all in the same part of town,” said Hiro. He tapped a few keys and brought up several camera views. “Look. They’re all in an area known for prostitution and drug trade. All of them.”

“So, is this devil targeting people who are going after hookers and drugs?” asked Jak with a frown.

“We’re not sure,” said Eric, “but it’s an area that we’re concerned about given the children that are missing. We do know that the main gang leader in that area, Jean Pierre Monet, is notorious for punishing those that don’t do his bidding. He wears a big top hat and paints his face like a skeleton, proclaiming to be a Vodou Priest.”

“Fuck me,” muttered Jak.
